Self-Employed Programme
Upon successful acceptance and registration of a project proposal by the Board of Investment, an Occupational Permit that allows an eligible non-citizen to live and work in Mauritius for up to three years will be issued.
Criteria to Qualify as Self-Employed:
It is an integral requirement in this category that a business plan be prepared which will demonstrate sustainability and viability in the short to medium term, this requirement is present in the occupational permit category and it is therefore necessary when applied for permanent residence in this category to demonstrate that the business has in fact succeeded, remained viable and sustainable.
- The applicant must provide details about his/her business project such as proposed investment level, amount to be transferred to Mauritius and expected annual business turnover income.
- The applicant needs to register with the Registrar of companies.
- The expected gross income generated by the proposed business activity should exceed MUR 600,000(=USD 20,000)
- Permanent Residency After 3 Years and the Right to purchase land.
- Non-citizens holding an occupation permit and may apply for permanent residence status at the expiry of their occupation permit provided the following conditions are satisfied. In addition, the permanent resident can then purchase property on the island.
- Self-Employed: The annual gross income of the self-employed should have exceeded MUR 3 million (Approximately US$100,000) during first three (3) years.
Residence Permit for Dependents
Dependents include spouse and children less than 18 years. Spouse includes both married and common law partners. Children include legally adopted children and children from a previous marriage.
An application for residence permit should be made on the Application to enter Mauritius form to the occupation permit unit. The processing time for this category varies between 3 and 5 working days.
The spouse for the holder of an occupation permit is eligible to work in Mauritius. In case, a separate application for an occupation permit or a work permit, whichever is applicable, should be submitted.
